Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo sworn in for second term

Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo popularly known as Jokowi has been sworn into office for his second and final five-year term. The 58-year-old Jokowi took oath at a ceremony in Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The ceremony was attended by politicians and many foreign dignitaries.

Key Highlights

He was re-elected in presidential election polls that took place in 17 April 2019. He clinched victory with 55.5% of vote. His election comes amid a string of fresh challenges around security, corruption and economic slowdown.

During the oath ceremony, President stated that his final term would be aimed at eradicating poverty and catapulting Indonesia into a developed country with one of the world’s top 5 economies by 2045.

Along with Jokowi, 76-year-old vice president Maruf Amin was also sworn into office. He now replaces Widodo’s vice president in his first term, Jusuf Kalla.
