India’s Resolution on Sustainable Wetlands Lifestyle

India’s resolution on promoting sustainable lifestyles for wetlands was adopted at the 15th Ramsar Conference of Parties (CoP15) held at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The resolution received strong support from 172 contracting parties and international organisations. It marks the crucial role of individual and societal choices in conserving wetlands and encouraging a pro-planet lifestyle globally.

Background and Significance

The resolution builds on India’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2021 UNFCCC CoP26. Mission LiFE aims to create a global movement encouraging people to adopt environmentally responsible behaviours. By linking sustainable lifestyles with wetlands conservation, the resolution emphasises the interconnectedness of human habits and ecosystem health.

Key Provisions of the Resolution

The resolution urges member states to integrate sustainable lifestyle interventions into wetland management plans and investments. It calls for voluntary action to reduce environmental degradation through resource conservation and waste minimisation. The resolution also promotes equitable socio-economic development by considering the impact of lifestyle choices across all social groups and generations.

Whole-of-Society Approach

A core element is the ‘whole of society’ approach. This means involving individuals, communities, governments, and private sectors in wetlands conservation. It encourages collaboration and partnerships at all levels to create enabling conditions for sustainable living. Education and awareness-raising are brought into light as vital tools to empower citizens for informed decision-making.

Alignment with Global Frameworks

India’s resolution aligns with earlier international efforts such as the Ramsar Resolution XIV.8 on Communication, Education, Participation, and Awareness (CEPA) and the 10-year framework on sustainable production and consumption. It complements the UN Environment Assembly’s Resolution 6/8 on promoting sustainable lifestyles adopted in 2024.

India’s National Initiatives

India has integrated Mission LiFE into its wetlands conservation policies. Campaigns like ‘Mission Sahbhagita’ and ‘Save Wetlands’ have mobilised over two million volunteers. These efforts have led to mapping more than 170,000 wetlands and demarcating clear boundaries for nearly 120,000 wetlands across the country within three years. This citizen participation strengthens conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.

Definition and Importance of Sustainable Lifestyles

Sustainable lifestyles refer to social behaviours and choices that minimise environmental harm, support fair socio-economic growth, and improve quality of life. They promote conservation of resources, reduce waste, and ensure health and social well-being. Such lifestyles are essential for protecting fragile ecosystems like wetlands and achieving global sustainability goals.
