India’s Organ Transplants at Record High in 2024

India achieved a historic milestone by performing over 18,900 organ transplants in 2024. This is the highest number recorded in a single year. The figure marks rise from fewer than 5,000 transplants in 2013. India is now third globally in total organ transplants, after the United States and China. The country also leads the world in hand transplants, reflecting advanced surgical skills and committed medical professionals.

Current Organ Transplant Scenario

India’s organ transplant numbers have surged remarkably in recent years. The rise reflects improved healthcare infrastructure and growing public awareness. Despite this, a large gap remains between patients needing transplants and available donors. Organ failure cases are increasing, creating pressure on the healthcare system. Thousands still wait for life-saving transplants each year.

Efforts to Boost Organ Donation

The government launched an Aadhaar-based online pledge system in 2023. Over 3.30 lakh citizens have pledged to donate organs. This shows rising awareness and social commitment. The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) actively promotes organ donation through campaigns and events. States and medical institutions are urged to appoint permanent transplant coordinators. These measures aim to streamline donor identification and consent processes.

Challenges in Organ Donation

The main challenge is the shortage of donors relative to demand. This gap is not due to unwillingness but lack of awareness and myths around donation. Families often hesitate to give timely consent. Public education and open dialogue are essential to overcome these barriers. Organ donation is a noble act, with one donor able to save up to eight lives by donating multiple organs.

Government Support and Financial Aid

The Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi provides financial aid up to Rs 15 lakh for poor patients needing kidney, liver, heart, or lung transplants. Post-transplant medical expenses receive additional support of up to Rs 10,000 per month. Kidney transplants are also covered under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana. These schemes reduce the financial burden on patients and encourage more transplants.

Promoting Preventive Health Measures

Unhealthy lifestyles and dietary habits contribute to organ failure. The government advocates yoga and Ayurveda to strengthen organs and boost immunity. Simple lifestyle changes can prevent many diseases leading to organ damage. The Prime Minister has urged citizens to reduce oil consumption by 10 per cent to encourage a healthier future. Such preventive steps are crucial to reduce the organ failure burden.
