India’s First Private Helicopter Assembly Line Launched
India has operationalised its first private-sector helicopter Final Assembly Line (FAL) with the inauguration of the Airbus H125 facility at Vemagal in Karnataka. The plant, owned by Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), was inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, signalling a deepening of Indo-French aerospace cooperation.
The development marks a milestone in India’s defence and civil aviation manufacturing ambitions under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
First-of-Its-Kind Private Facility
The Vemagal facility represents the first instance of an Indian private company undertaking full-scale manufacturing, integration, testing and maintenance of a rotary-wing aircraft within the country. TASL, in partnership with Airbus Helicopters, will assemble the civil H125 helicopter and potentially its military variant, the H125M.
The facility is expected to provide localised lifecycle support, strengthening India’s maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) ecosystem. The first “Made in India” H125 helicopter is scheduled for delivery in early 2027, with export plans for the South Asian region.
Capabilities of the H125 Platform
The Airbus H125 is currently the most widely used helicopter in India and South Asia. Globally, the Écureuil family has accumulated over 40 million flight hours. The H125 is also notable for being the only helicopter to have landed on the summit of Mount Everest.
The H125M military variant is designed for tactical reconnaissance, surveillance, high-altitude logistics, search and rescue, and medical evacuation missions. Civil applications include emergency medical services, disaster response, law enforcement and regional connectivity under the UDAN scheme.
Strengthening Indo-French Industrial Ties
This initiative is the second major Tata-Airbus collaboration in India, following the C295 military transport aircraft assembly line. Airbus currently sources components and services worth over $1.5 billion annually from India, integrating Indian suppliers into its global supply chain.
The partnership reflects expanding industrial cooperation between India and France, particularly in high-technology and defence manufacturing sectors.
