India’s First Forest University to Come Up in Gorakhpur

Uttar Pradesh is set to create history with the establishment of India’s first dedicated forest university, marking a major step in strengthening education and research in forestry, wildlife, and environmental sciences. Contrary to expectations that such an institution would be located in a metro city, the university will be established in Gorakhpur, eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Location and Campus Details

The forest university will be developed on a 125-acre campus in Gorakhpur. The site is strategically located near the Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre, an area already identified for wildlife and environmental conservation. The land approval process has been completed, and the project is moving towards implementation following administrative clearances.

Vision and Academic Focus

The proposed university will function as a specialised institution focused exclusively on forest sciences. Academic programmes will cover forestry, agroforestry, social forestry, horticulture, wildlife studies, ecology, climate change, and environmental sustainability. Unlike conventional universities, the curriculum will place strong emphasis on field-based learning, practical exposure, and applied research in natural ecosystems.

Government Initiative and Funding

The project was announced by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who highlighted its role in building skilled professionals in forest management and conservation. The state government allocated ₹50 crore in the 2024 budget for preliminary work. The draft Act for establishing the university is under final review, after which the Detailed Project Report will trigger the tendering and construction process.
