Indian Railways Launches First LNG-Diesel Dual-Fuel DEMU Train

Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable transport by operationalising the country’s first LNG-Diesel dual-fuel Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train. The initiative marks a decisive step towards reducing emissions and fuel costs in rail operations, aligning with broader national clean energy goals.

First-of-Its-Kind Deployment at Sabarmati

The dual-fuel DEMU train has been operationalised at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad under Indian Railways. The project involved converting the driving power cars of a 1,400 horsepower DEMU train to operate on a dual-fuel system. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is used to substitute nearly 40 per cent of conventional diesel consumption, without compromising performance or reliability.

Successful Trials and Regular Passenger Service

According to the Divisional Railway Manager of Ahmedabad, Ved Prakash, the converted power cars have successfully completed field trials covering more than 2,000 kilometres. Following these trials, the train has entered regular passenger service and is operating smoothly without any technical or operational challenges. This validates the feasibility of LNG-based propulsion in day-to-day rail services.

Environmental and Economic Advantages

The LNG-Diesel dual-fuel system offers multiple benefits. It significantly reduces carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, contributing to improved air quality along railway corridors. Lower diesel consumption also translates into reduced fuel costs, making the system economically attractive for large-scale adoption across non-electrified routes.

Important Facts for Exams

  • LNG stands for Liquefied Natural Gas.
  • DEMU refers to Diesel Electric Multiple Unit trains.
  • The dual-fuel system replaces about 40 per cent of diesel with LNG.
  • The project supports cleaner and greener rail transport.

Step Towards Greener Rail Operations

The successful operationalisation of the LNG-Diesel DEMU train sets a new benchmark for eco-friendly innovation in Indian Railways. It opens pathways for scaling up alternative fuel technologies, especially on routes where full electrification is yet to be achieved, reinforcing the railways’ commitment to sustainable and low-emission transport solutions.
