Indian Coast Guard Inducts First Pollution Control Vessel Samudra Pratap

The Indian Coast Guard has inducted its first dedicated Pollution Control Vessel, Samudra Pratap, marking a major milestone in India’s maritime environmental protection capabilities. The vessel was formally delivered during an induction ceremony held at Goa Shipyard Limited, reinforcing India’s commitment to indigenisation and marine pollution control.

Indigenous Design and Strategic Significance

Samudra Pratap is the first indigenously designed and built Pollution Control Vessel to be commissioned into the Indian Coast Guard fleet. Constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited, the vessel has more than 60 per cent indigenous content, aligning with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. Its induction significantly enhances the Coast Guard’s capacity to respond to marine pollution incidents and enforce environmental regulations.

Advanced Combat and Mission Systems

The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art systems, including a 30 mm CRN-91 gun and two 12.7 mm stabilised remote-controlled guns integrated with advanced fire control systems. Samudra Pratap also features indigenously developed mission equipment, enhancing operational reliability and self-reliance. These systems enable the vessel to perform not only pollution response roles but also maritime law enforcement and security tasks.

Pollution Response and Maneuvering Capabilities

Samudra Pratap is the first Pollution Control Vessel in the ICG fleet to be fitted with a retractable stern thruster, Dynamic Positioning System and flush-type side sweeping arms. It carries specialised pollution response equipment, a dedicated pollution response boat with davit, high-capacity external firefighting systems, a sea boat davit and a shaft generator. These features allow precise manoeuvring and effective containment and recovery of marine pollutants during emergencies.
