Indian Army Inducts Solar-Powered MAPSS Surveillance Drone

India has taken a significant step in unmanned defence capability as the Indian Army signed a ₹168 crore contract for a solar-powered surveillance drone system designed for long-endurance missions. The induction marks the first time the Army is bringing a solar-powered unmanned aerial platform into active service, enhancing persistent border surveillance.

MAPSS and Its Strategic Role

The system, named Medium Altitude Persistent Surveillance System (MAPSS), has been developed by Bengaluru-based NewSpace Research & Technologies under the Defence Ministry’s innovation framework. Unlike conventional unmanned aircraft that rely on batteries or fuel, MAPSS uses solar energy, enabling it to remain airborne for extended durations without interruption. This capability is critical for monitoring long stretches of sensitive borders.

Operational Advantages and Mission Profile

MAPSS is intended for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions across varied terrain, from high-altitude northern regions to western desert areas. Defence officials stated that the system will help track movement, observe border activity, support communication links in remote locations and assist in target identification during operations. Its electric propulsion makes it quieter and reduces thermal signatures, lowering the risk of detection.

Testing, Trials and Indigenous Development

The project builds on NewSpace’s earlier work on high-altitude solar drones, some of which have demonstrated endurance beyond 24 hours at altitudes exceeding 26,000 feet. These trials were conducted at the Aeronautical Test Range. The Army-specific MAPSS variant has been optimised for medium-altitude operations and has completed trials in operational environments.
