India to Host Continental Tour Silver Level Athletics Meet

India to Host Continental Tour Silver Level Athletics Meet

India will step onto a larger global athletics stage next year as Bhubaneswar prepares to host the country’s first World Athletics Continental Tour Silver level meet on 22 August. The upgrade signals growing confidence in India’s organisational capacity and offers domestic athletes a rare chance to chase ranking points against strong international fields, without travelling abroad.

Significance of the Silver Level Upgrade

The Silver level meet sits in Category B of the World Athletics Continental Tour hierarchy, below the elite Gold and Platinum tiers but well above Bronze events. It offers enhanced world ranking points, greater prize money, and broader international participation. For Indian athletes, performing well at home could significantly influence qualification prospects for major global championships.

Expanded Domestic Calendar for 2026

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) announced a widened 2026 competition roster, increasing domestic events from 32 to 40. A major highlight is the launch of India’s first national indoor championships, scheduled to take place at Bhubaneswar’s indoor stadium on 24–25 March. The move marks a strategic shift towards modern training and competitive environments.

New Indian Athletics Series to Boost Regional Participation

To strengthen grassroots competition, AFI will introduce a 16-leg Indian Athletics Series starting in April and running until September. The series aims to provide regular meets for emerging athletes, culminating in an invitation-only finale at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on 12 September. The initiative is expected to create a structured pathway for regional talent.
