India on Friday successfully conducted a test launch of the Agni-III intermediate-range ballistic missile, reinforcing the credibility of its strategic deterrence posture. The test was carried out from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha and validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile system.

Agni-III missile capabilities

Agni-III is an intermediate-range ballistic missile with a strike range of approximately 3,000 to 3,500 kilometres. Indigenously developed, the two-stage missile is solid-fuelled and capable of carrying a payload of up to 1,500 kg. It measures 16.7 metres in length, has a diameter of 2 metres, and a launch weight of about 48,300 kg. The missile is primarily designed as a nuclear delivery system and is estimated to be capable of carrying warheads with yields in the range of 200–300 kilotons.

Navigation, accuracy and design features

The Agni-III employs a strapdown inertial navigation system supported by GPS, providing a reported accuracy of around 40 metres circular error probable. Its first stage uses a maraging steel motor case, while the second stage incorporates a carbon-fibre motor case. Both stages are equipped with thrust vector control systems, enhancing flight stability, manoeuvrability and accuracy throughout the missile’s trajectory.
