India Sets Up National Lab for Air Pollution Equipment Calibration

India has inaugurated the world’s second National Environmental Standard Laboratory, marking a major step in strengthening environmental governance and reducing reliance on imported air pollution monitoring equipment. The facility has been established at the CSIR–National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi and was inaugurated by Union Minister Jitendra Singh during the institution’s 80th Foundation Day celebrations. Until now, only the United Kingdom has hosted a comparable laboratory.

Why the New Laboratory Matters

Most air pollution monitoring instruments used across India are imported and certified under foreign environmental conditions. These conditions differ significantly from India’s diverse climate, affecting long-term measurement accuracy. The new laboratory will provide India-specific testing and calibration, ensuring instruments perform reliably under local temperature, humidity, and pollution loads. This is expected to improve the credibility of air quality data used for regulation and policy.

Boost to Domestic Manufacturing

By developing indigenous testing and certification capabilities, the laboratory will support domestic manufacturing of standardised air pollution monitoring equipment. This move is aimed at ending dependence on foreign certification agencies and positioning India as an exporter of such instruments, particularly to developing countries. The global air pollution monitoring systems market is currently valued at nearly $4 billion, offering significant export potential.

Support for Policy and Clean Air Targets

The facility will directly assist regulatory bodies, industries, and startups by ensuring transparent and traceable calibration of monitoring systems. Accurate data will strengthen enforcement of schemes such as the National Clean Air Programme, which targets a reduction in particulate pollution across major cities. Improved monitoring is critical for tracking compliance and assessing the effectiveness of mitigation measures.
