India Set to Join US-Led Pax Silica Initiative

India is likely to become a full member of the United States-led strategic initiative Pax Silica as early as next month. The development was indicated by the US Ambassador to India during his visit to New Delhi and signals a significant step in deepening India–US cooperation in advanced technologies, supply chain resilience, and the emerging artificial intelligence-driven global economy.

What Is Pax Silica?

Pax Silica is a multilateral initiative launched by the “United States Department of State”. It focuses on building a secure, trusted, and resilient global technology ecosystem. The initiative covers the entire technology value chain, ranging from energy security and critical minerals to semiconductor manufacturing and advanced artificial intelligence models. A central objective is to ensure that emerging technologies are developed and deployed in a safe, reliable, and economically sustainable manner.

Strategic Objectives of the Grouping

A key goal of Pax Silica is reducing “coercive dependencies” in global supply chains. This refers to limiting over-reliance on any single country for critical materials, technologies, or components, thereby reducing vulnerability to economic or political pressure. The initiative also aims to protect advanced technologies from theft, misuse, or hostile exploitation, while enabling trusted partners to fully leverage the economic potential of artificial intelligence and next-generation digital systems.

Members and Global Participation

The inaugural Pax Silica summit brought together leading technology and innovation hubs, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia. Additional participation came from Taiwan, the European Union, Canada, and the OECD grouping. India’s prospective inclusion would place it among a select group of countries shaping future global norms on technology governance, AI development, and supply chain security.
