India Launches First Tropical RAS-Based Rainbow Trout Farm

India has taken a major step towards technology-driven aquaculture with the inauguration of a Smart Green Aquaculture Farm and Research Institute in Telangana. The facility marks a significant shift in how high-value fish species can be cultivated, breaking long-held climatic limitations in Indian aquaculture.

Inauguration and Institutional Significance

The Smart Green Aquaculture Farm and state-of-the-art Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) facility will be inaugurated on January 5, 2026, in Hyderabad following a general body meeting. The event will be led by “Rajiv Ranjan Singh”, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and Panchayati Raj. The project has been established by Smart Green Aquaculture Limited at Kandukur Mandal in Ranga Reddy district, Telangana.

Technology Overturns Climatic Constraints

The facility represents India’s first commercial-scale tropical RAS-based Rainbow Trout Aquaculture Farm and Research Institute. Traditionally considered a cold-water species confined to Himalayan regions, rainbow trout has now been successfully farmed year-round in a tropical climate. This achievement demonstrates that precision engineering, controlled biological systems, and advanced water recirculation technologies can make technology, rather than climate, the defining factor for aquaculture viability in India.

Boost to Skills, Research and Fisheries Growth

Beyond production, the project will function as a live training and demonstration platform. It aims to equip youth with hands-on exposure to advanced aquaculture systems, automation, and biosecurity, thereby strengthening human capital in the fisheries sector. The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s sustained push to modernise fisheries, with cumulative central investments of ₹38,572 crore approved or announced since 2015 across various schemes.

Cold water fisheries are emerging as a high-potential segment within India’s aquaculture sector, driven by demand for premium species and sustainable technologies. Trout farming has so far been concentrated in Himalayan and hill states such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. With improved hatcheries, annual production has reached about 14 lakh trout seeds, creating employment and livelihood opportunities. The Department of Fisheries has also notified the development of cold water fisheries clusters in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, reflecting a broader strategy to transform aquaculture into a technology-led, market-oriented growth engine for India.
