India Jordan ties deepen after Modi visit marks 75 years

India and Jordan have issued a comprehensive joint statement following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on December 15–16, 2025. The visit, held at the invitation of King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across strategic sectors.

Political engagement and diplomatic momentum

The two leaders held bilateral and expanded talks in Amman, reviewing the full spectrum of India–Jordan relations. They acknowledged the steady growth of ties marked by mutual trust, goodwill, and frequent high-level interactions. Both sides agreed to further institutionalise cooperation through established dialogue mechanisms, including political consultations and joint working groups. The fifth round of Political Consultations is scheduled to be held in New Delhi, underscoring sustained diplomatic engagement.

Trade, investment and economic cooperation

Economic cooperation emerged as a central pillar of the visit. Bilateral trade stood at USD 2.3 billion in 2024, positioning India as Jordan’s third-largest trading partner. The leaders agreed on diversifying the trade basket and convening the 11th Trade and Economic Joint Committee in early 2026. They also welcomed the Jordan–India Business Forum, which brought together industry leaders to explore opportunities in logistics, infrastructure, and customs facilitation, leveraging Jordan’s strategic geographic location.

Technology, education and capacity building

Both sides reviewed cooperation in digital technology, education, and capacity building. Agreements were reached on collaborating in digital transformation, sharing India’s experience in Digital Public Infrastructure, and expanding the India–Jordan Centre of Excellence in Information Technology. India reiterated its commitment to human resource development through the ITEC programme, with Jordan appreciating the increase in training slots from 35 to 50 annually.

Cultural ties were strengthened through a Cultural Exchange Programme for 2025–2029 and a twinning agreement between Petra and the Ellora Caves. The leaders also agreed to explore enhanced direct connectivity and deepen coordination in multilateral platforms, reinforcing India–Jordan alignment on global development and sustainability agendas.
