India Builds First Autonomous Maritime Shipbuilding Centre in Andhra

India has taken a major step towards strengthening its maritime and defence manufacturing capabilities with the foundation of the world’s first Autonomous Maritime Shipbuilding and Systems Centre in Andhra Pradesh. The facility is being developed by Mumbai-based Sagar Defence Engineering at the Juvvaladinne fishing harbour in Nellore district, marking a significant milestone in indigenous maritime technology development.

Strategic Project in Andhra Pradesh

The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated 29.58 acres of land at the Juvvaladinne fishing harbour for the project. The location offers direct sea access, enabling the construction, launch, testing, and deployment of maritime vessels from the same site.

The initiative aligns with the state government’s broader vision to develop advanced manufacturing infrastructure along the coastline and strengthen India’s marine technology ecosystem. Officials expect the project to boost domestic defence production and enhance maritime innovation.

Focus on Autonomous Maritime Technologies

The new centre will focus on the development of advanced autonomous maritime systems. These include unmanned surface vessels (USVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), intelligent navigation systems, maritime sensors, and secure communication networks.

The facility will also work on command-and-control platforms that allow maritime systems to operate with minimal human intervention. Such technologies are expected to improve operational efficiency, safety, and surveillance capabilities in maritime environments.

Use of Digital Twin and Smart Manufacturing

A key technological feature of the centre will be the use of digital twin technology. This involves creating virtual replicas of ships and shipyard infrastructure to simulate performance, test upgrades, and optimise vessel designs before actual deployment.

The shipyard will also adopt smart manufacturing technologies, including robotic fabrication systems for automated welding, cutting, painting, and assembly. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) will handle material transport within the yard, while additive manufacturing or 3D printing will enable rapid production of specialised components and spare parts.
