India Becomes First to Produce Bio-Bitumen Commercially

India has become the first country in the world to commercially produce bio-bitumen for use in road construction, marking a significant milestone in sustainable infrastructure development. The announcement was made by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at the CSIR Technology Transfer Ceremony held in New Delhi.

What is Bio-Bitumen and Why It Matters

Bitumen is a black, viscous hydrocarbon mixture derived from crude oil and is a key binding material in road construction. Bio-bitumen is an eco-friendly alternative produced using biomass and agricultural waste. According to the Minister, this innovation will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels while addressing the environmental challenge of crop residue burning, a major contributor to air pollution in several parts of India.

The Minister congratulated the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for achieving this historic milestone. The commercial production of bio-bitumen represents a successful translation of laboratory research into real-world application, demonstrating India’s growing strength in indigenous scientific innovation and technology transfer for public infrastructure.

Mr Gadkari described bio-bitumen as a transformative step towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
