India and Seychelles Begin Joint Military Exercise Lamitiye 2026

An Indian Armed Forces contingent has arrived in Seychelles to participate in the 11th edition of the joint military exercise “Lamitiye 2026”. The exercise is being conducted with the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) at the Seychelles Defence Academy from March 9 to March 20. The initiative reflects the growing defence cooperation between India and Seychelles and aims to strengthen operational coordination between the armed forces of the two countries.

About the Lamitiye Military Exercise

“Lamitiye”, meaning “friendship” in the Creole language, is a biennial joint military exercise that has been conducted in Seychelles since 2001. The training programme focuses on enhancing military cooperation, operational coordination and mutual understanding between the two countries’ armed forces. Over the years, the exercise has evolved into an important platform for defence engagement and capacity building between India and Seychelles.

Participation from All Three Services

The 2026 edition of the exercise includes participation from all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces. The Indian contingent consists of personnel from the Assam Regiment, along with assets and personnel from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. Naval participation includes the deployment of INS Trikand, while the Indian Air Force has deployed a C-130 aircraft to support the exercise activities.

Focus on Tactical Training and Modern Equipment

During the 12-day exercise, troops from both countries will engage in joint training activities designed to address potential security threats in semi-urban environments. Planned activities include field training exercises, tactical drills, combat discussions, case studies, lectures and demonstrations. The exercise will also provide an opportunity to showcase new-generation military equipment and technologies used in modern operations.
