India and Kenya Sign 5 Pacts

The discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto resulted in the signing of five pacts, fostering cooperation in diverse fields such as sports, education, and digital solutions. Both leaders unveiled a joint vision document to enhance maritime engagement in the Indian Ocean region. The Kenyan side, in accordance with its laws, offered land to Indian companies for cultivation, emphasizing collaboration in the agricultural sector.

Agricultural Modernization

In a significant development, India has committed a USD 250 million line of credit to Kenya for the modernization of its agricultural sector. Modi and Ruto, during their talks, focused on strengthening bilateral ties in defense, trade, energy, digital public infrastructure, and healthcare.

Economic Engagement

To boost economic engagement, the leaders explored the use of local currencies for trade and financing development projects under the development partnership. India expressed its commitment to sharing achievements in digital public infrastructure with Kenya, positioning itself as a reliable development partner.

Counter-Terror Cooperation

Recognizing terrorism as a significant global challenge, both nations underscored their commitment to counter-terrorism cooperation. India and Kenya agreed to intensify efforts in this area, highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing shared security concerns.

Strengthening Defense Cooperation and UN Security Council Reform

Defense cooperation was a key focus, with an emphasis on military exercises, capacity building, and linking defense industries. The leaders called for urgent reforms in the United Nations Security Council to make it more credible, representative, and effective.

Inviting Indian Investments

Kenyan President Ruto extended an invitation to Indian companies to invest in Kenya, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, health, green energy, and green mobility sectors. The joint statement expressed gratitude for India’s concessional lines of credit in energy, textiles, and SMEs, demonstrating the depth of the bilateral partnership.

Recognizing healthcare and pharmaceuticals as crucial areas of bilateral trade, both leaders explored ways to facilitate increased Indian investments in Kenya. The goal is to enhance health infrastructure and promote the production of medical equipment, ensuring better access to affordable healthcare for Kenyans.
