INCOIS Launches Submarine Cable

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has initiated a submarine cable project to enhance long-term observations of the Indian Ocean. This project, supported by the international scientific community, will improve the understanding of ocean dynamics, seismic activity, and tsunami risks. The initiative involves the installation of a 150 km cable west of Wandoor in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, featuring advanced sensors for oceanographic and geophysical data collection.

Submarine Cable

The submarine cable will connect two science nodes equipped with sensors placed at depths of 2,000 to 2,500 metres. These nodes will gather crucial data on ocean parameters. A landing station will be established at Wandoor, facilitating real-time data acquisition. This infrastructure aims to monitor seismic events and provide vital information about potential tsunami triggers.

Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme (ODTP)

INCOIS is involved in three key projects out of the 10 key projects under the Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme (ODTP) by the Inter-Governmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. These projects focus on enhancing knowledge of tsunami sources and improving early warning systems.

Goals include:

  • Studying past and potential tsunami sources.
  • Assessing impact on infrastructure and marine assets.
  • Improving monitoring, forecasting, and early warning systems.

People Centred Tsunami Early Warning for India

One project is the People Centred Tsunami Early Warning for India (PCTWIN). This initiative aims to enhance disaster risk knowledge and improve tsunami detection and forecasting. It also focuses on advancing communication strategies and boosting community preparedness for tsunami events.

Tsunami Ready Odisha Project

The Tsunami Ready Odisha (TRO) project is designed to boost coastal community resilience. It aims to raise awareness and preparedness among residents to safeguard lives and property against tsunami threats. This project is linked to UNESCO’s Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme, which prepares communities to respond effectively to tsunami warnings.

Access to Tsunami Hazard Maps

INCOIS provides access to tsunami hazard maps and evacuation plans. Currently, two villages in Odisha have been declared “tsunami ready,” with efforts ongoing to prepare additional villages. This initiative is in collaboration with the Odisha State Disaster Management Agency (OSDMA).
