IIT Madras Launches Global Initiative to Become World’s First Multinational IIT
Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has launched IITM Global, a major international outreach initiative aimed at positioning the Indian Institute of Technology Madras as the world’s first multinational IIT. The initiative seeks to establish overseas campuses, research centres, and startup ecosystems, marking a significant expansion of India’s higher education and innovation footprint abroad.
Vision Behind IITM Global
Anchored in IIT Madras’s world-class faculty, advanced infrastructure, and strong industry linkages, IITM Global is designed to drive innovation and entrepreneurship with a clear focus on societal impact. The initiative aims to enable international research collaboration, startup engagement, and academic partnerships, thereby integrating Indian technical expertise with global challenges and opportunities.
Foreign Policy and Global Education Link
Speaking at the launch, Jaishankar highlighted how India’s foreign policy is increasingly leveraging domestic institutions for global impact. He cited the establishment of an IIT Madras campus in Tanzania as an example of how Indian expertise is being extended to partner countries to support capacity-building, skills development, and technological advancement.
Global Partnerships and MoUs
As part of the IITM Global rollout, IIT Madras has signed several high-impact memoranda of understanding with international partners. These include three MoUs in the United States, one in the United Kingdom, three in Germany, three in Dubai, three across the Asia-Pacific region including Singapore and Malaysia, and six under the India-for-Global initiative.
