IIT Dhanbad Hosts Conference on Ancient Indian Science

A three-day national conference on “Ancient Indian Text, Science and Technology” commenced at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, drawing scholars from across India to explore the intersections between classical Indian knowledge systems and modern scientific thought. The event aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and re-examine traditional texts through contemporary analytical frameworks.

The conference is sponsored by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation. It is jointly organised by the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems and the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the institute.

Inaugural Session and Objectives

The inaugural session was held at the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre on campus. Welcoming participants, Head of Department and Convenor Gyan Prakash said the conference seeks to revisit ancient Indian texts using interdisciplinary approaches, especially in the domains of science and technology.

The platform is designed to encourage collaboration between scholars of Sanskrit texts, philosophy, and historians of science with experts from engineering and applied sciences.

Conceptual Foundations of Indian Knowledge

Director Sukumar Mishra, presiding over the session, underlined the conceptual depth of Indian knowledge traditions. He explained the progression from gyan (knowledge) to vigyan (analytical understanding) and prodyogiki (applied science). According to him, science evolves into technology when it yields tangible socio-economic outcomes.

He emphasised that ancient Indian traditions integrated philosophy, scientific reasoning and practical application within a holistic intellectual framework.

Keynote Lectures and Discussions

Chief guest CD Sebastian of IIT Bombay delivered a lecture on “Sānkhya Thought and Modern Science,” drawing parallels between classical Sānkhya philosophy and contemporary scientific models. Guest of honour Swami Kripamayanand Avadhut spoke on the complementary relationship between spirituality and science in Indian traditions.
