IGI Becomes India’s First Water-Positive Airport
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has achieved the distinction of being the country’s first water-positive airport among facilities handling over 40 million passengers annually. The certification reflects substantial progress in sustainable water management and long-term environmental planning.
What Water-Positive Status Means
A water-positive facility replenishes more freshwater than it consumes. IGI Airport met this benchmark by expanding rainwater harvesting, boosting storage capacity and adopting advanced recycling systems. The achievement was formally recognised at the Water Innovation Summit 2025, under the NITI Aayog–CII water neutrality framework.
Infrastructure Enabling Water Replenishment
The airport has deployed 625 rainwater harvesting structures across its premises, significantly increasing capture and recharge. Two new underground reservoirs with a combined 9-million-litre capacity enhance storage, ensuring optimal use during dry periods. A 16.6 MLD zero-liquid-discharge sewage treatment plant recycles wastewater for non-potable applications, reducing dependence on external water sources.
Efficient Reuse and Water Management Systems
Recycled water is channelled into heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, landscape irrigation and toilet flushing. Automated systems, including drip networks and sprinklers, optimise usage and minimise wastage. A dedicated treatment facility ensures high-quality potable water availability for passengers while maintaining efficient consumption standards.
Exam Oriented Facts
- IGI Airport is India’s first water-positive airport handling over 40 million passengers.
- It uses 625 rainwater harvesting structures and two reservoirs totalling 9 million litres.
- A 16.6 MLD zero-liquid-discharge STP recycles all wastewater.
- The certification aligns with NITI Aayog–CII water neutrality standards.
Strengthening Sustainability and Climate Readiness
Delhi International Airport Limited emphasises that water positivity enhances the airport’s climate resilience and supports its long-term goal of becoming a net-zero facility. The achievement highlights a broader shift towards responsible resource management in aviation infrastructure, positioning IGI as a national benchmark for sustainable airport operations.
