ICMR Launches SHINE Initiative

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) launched the ICMR-SHINE Initiative recently. This nationwide student outreach programme targets school students from Classes 9 to 12. It aims to spark scientific curiosity and promote careers in biomedical research. The event aligns with the Prime Minister’s call for One Day as a Scientist and honours Prof. V. Ramalingaswami, a pioneer in Indian medical research.

What is ICMR-SHINE Initiative?

ICMR-SHINE stands for Science & Health Innovation for the Nextgen Explorers. It is a first-of-its-kind effort where all ICMR institutes simultaneously host interactive activities. These activities engage thousands of students across India in science, health, and biomedical research. The initiative demonstrates ICMR’s commitment to nurturing future scientific leaders.

Objectives and Target Audience

The initiative targets secondary and senior secondary students from Classes 9 to 12. It aims to inspire them to pursue biomedical research careers. Students learn how public health research saves lives and what scientists do daily. The programme marks that science is practical and dynamic, not just theoretical knowledge.

Hands-on Experiences and Expert Interaction

Group activities include a survey game and an anthropometry game. Students visit laboratories and an exhibition by the National Institute of Malaria Research (ICMR-NIMR) field unit. They meet scientists and technical staff to understand their roles in public health research. This direct interaction helps students see the real-world impact of biomedical research.

Significance and National Impact

ICMR-SHINE reflects India’s growing leadership in health research and innovation. It supports the government’s vision to develop a scientific temper among youth. The initiative also commemorates Prof. V. Ramalingaswami’s contributions to medical science. By inspiring young minds, ICMR strengthens the future of biomedical research in India.
