Guntur Lam Farm Releases Two New Chilli Varieties

The Regional Horticultural Research Station (RHRS), Lam Farm, Guntur, released two chilli varieties, LCA-625 and LCA-643, on 16 June 2026. The two varieties were developed as alternatives to Teja and Byadgi chilli types, which are widely used in Indian chilli cultivation.

LCA-625: Dry Chilli Variety

LCA-625 is a chilli variety intended mainly for dry chilli production. It has pungency in the range of 45,000 to 50,000 Scoville Heat Units and a red colour value of 60 to 65 ASTA units. Scoville Heat Units measure capsaicin-based pungency in chilli peppers, while ASTA units measure red colour intensity in dried chilli.

LCA-643: Green and Dry Chilli Variety

LCA-643 is suitable for both green and dry chilli cultivation. It produces light green fruits that turn bright red after drying, and its dried form resembles the Byadgi variety. The variety has moderate resistance to the Gemini virus and performs well under black thrips infestation.

Seed Sale and Availability

Foundation seed sale for LCA-625 and LCA-643 began on 16 June 2026 at Lam Farm. The seeds were priced at ₹1,200 per kilogram, and the sale was restricted to 250 grams per farmer because of limited availability. The varieties were stated to be available only at Lam Farm.
