Global Food Regulators Summit 2025 Advances Food Safety

The Global Food Regulators Summit (GFRS) 2025 was inaugurated in New Delhi from 26 to 27 September. Organised by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the summit runs alongside World Food India 2025. The event focuses on evolving food systems and global collaboration for safer food standards.

Theme and Vision of GFRS 2025

The theme, Evolving Food Systems Yatha Annam Tatha Manah, emphasises the link between food quality and mental, physical, and social well-being. It recognises food as a force shaping health and society. The summit aims to provide a platform for global regulators to harmonise standards, strengthen risk assessment, and explore technological advances in food safety. The goal is to protect consumer health, promote fair trade, and support sustainable food systems.

Role of FSSAI and Indian Leadership

FSSAI has played a very important role in advancing food safety in India and globally. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare supports a multi-dimensional approach to food safety. Regulators are urged to stay alert to changing food habits and markets. Updating food safety standards and regulations is essential to meet emerging challenges and innovations.

Summit Structure and Participation

GFRS 2025 features eight plenary sessions and several parallel conclaves. These sessions include keynote addresses by international organisations such as WHO, Codex, FAO, and EFSA. Interactive and bilateral meetings enable knowledge exchange and collaboration among regulators, scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders. This creates a robust ecosystem for regulatory harmonisation and capacity building.

Significance of ‘Eat Right Thali’ Initiative

The summit revealed the ‘Eat Right Thali’ book, celebrating India’s culinary heritage and balanced diets. The book presents traditional thalis from various states, denoting local ingredients and cooking methods. It aligns with efforts to combat obesity and lifestyle diseases through traditional diets. This initiative promotes preventive health via mindful and indigenous eating practices.

Global Impact and Future Prospects

GFRS 2025 is the third edition hosted by India, reinforcing the country’s role as a global food safety hub. The summit encourages innovation and regulatory dialogue on a global scale. It addresses current and future food safety challenges by encouraging international cooperation and knowledge sharing. This strengthens food systems to be safer, resilient, and inclusive worldwide.
