GIRG Initiative To Improve India’s Performance In International Assessments

India has outlined major steps to modernise its statistical system and sharpen its performance on international benchmarks. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) confirmed that revisions to key national indices and coordinated action on global rankings are underway to ensure data accuracy and reflect structural changes in the economy.

Revisions in GDP, CPI and IIP Methodology

MoSPI compiles GDP estimates, the monthly Consumer Price Index and the monthly Index of Industrial Production using internationally aligned standards. The ministry periodically revises the Base Year of these indices to incorporate new datasets, modernise methods and capture shifts in production, consumption and pricing patterns.

Global Indices for Reforms and Growth Initiative

To improve India’s performance in international assessments, the government has launched the Global Indices for Reforms and Growth (GIRG) initiative. It monitors 26 major global indices published by 16 international agencies across four themes—economy, development, governance and industry—through inter-ministerial coordination.

Roles Assigned to Nodal Ministries

Under GIRG, 17 nodal ministries are responsible for driving improvements in the selected indices. They must review the methodologies used by publishing agencies, ensure that updated official Indian data is applied, and work with line ministries to identify performance gaps and initiate reforms.

Minister Rao Inderjit Singh informed the Rajya Sabha that all nodal and line ministries are mandated to implement remedial measures to ensure measurable progress in global rankings.
