Ghatampur Thermal Power Project

The Ghatampur Thermal Power Project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, signifies a very important advancement in India’s energy landscape. Located in Kanpur Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, this project aims to address the growing electricity demands of the region and neighbouring states. It is a collaborative effort between Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd, NLC India Limited, and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited. The project is set to enhance energy security while promoting sustainable power generation.

Project Overview

The Ghatampur Thermal Power Project consists of three supercritical thermal power units, each with a capacity of 660 MW. This totals an impressive 1,980 MW of installed capacity. The total investment for the project stands at ₹21,780.94 crore. The first unit has been dedicated to the nation, while the remaining two units are expected to be operational by FY 2025-26.

Power Purchase Agreements

The project has established a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 1,487.28 MW of generated power. Uttar Pradesh will receive 75.12% of this power, while Assam will receive 24.88%. This agreement is contingent upon the transfer of a 20% equity share of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited in Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd to the Government of Assam.

Environmental Technologies

The Ghatampur Thermal Power Project incorporates advanced environmental technologies. These include Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) to mitigate nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions. Additionally, a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system ensures that no wastewater is released from the plant. The project also features Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations and Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems to track emissions effectively.

Water Conservation Efforts

A aspect of the project is its commitment to water conservation. Canal lining works covering 288 kilometres are underway to prevent seepage losses, conserving 195 million litres per day (MLD) of water. The raw water reservoirs have a combined capacity of approximately 46 lakh cubic metres.

Operational Efficiency

The coal-based supercritical boilers at the plant boast a boiler efficiency of 88.81%. The coal stockyard can hold 10.165 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of coal for continuous operation for 30 days at full load. An advanced substation automation system and a 765 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) system facilitate efficient power evacuation.

The Ghatampur Thermal Power Project is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities. It aims to stimulate socio-economic development in the region, aligning with the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
