Geospatial Self-certification portal

Department of Science and Technology (DST) launched the “Geospatial Self-Certification Portal” in a bid to convey adherence to provisions of Geospatial Guidelines by individuals, organisations, companies, and government agencies. It is a significant step for liberalising geospatial industry in India.

New Geospatial Data Guidelines

The government had issued new Geospatial Data Guidelines on February 15, 2021, with the objective of bringing improvements in India’s geospatial industry.
This was among government’s initiatives to promote India’s ease of doing business and entrepreneurship, by focusing on data and technology-driven growth.
Guidelines replaced the process of prior approvals, licenses, security clearances, and other restrictions for collection, preparation, generation, storage, dissemination, updating, publication, and/or digitisation of geospatial data and maps within the boundary of India.
It further provides for Self-Certification Regime to convey adherence to provisions of Geospatial Guidelines by individuals, organisations, companies, and the government.

Aim of Self-Certification Portal

The Geospatial Self-Certification portal was launched with the aim of removing such restrictions and making data more easily accessible to all. Making geospatial data accessible to all, corporations, organisations and individuals would be free to process acquired data and use it for developing required applications and solutions.

Who has developed the portal?

Geospatial Self-Certification Portal has been developed in association with the National Informatics Centre (NIC).

Significance of the portal

This portal is likely to reduce the time it takes for Geospatial enterprises, universities, researchers, and innovators to receive permissions and approvals for carrying out geospatial-related operations.

National Informatics Centre (NIC)

It is a department under Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It provides infrastructure, IT Services, IT Consultancy, etc to Central Government Departments and State Governments. Thus, it enables delivery of government services to Citizens. NIC was established by Late N Shesagiri in 1976.
