Gamosa

Gamosa

Gamosa is a piece of cloth that has varied uses- as a towel (called ‘uka gamosa’), for felicitating celebrities or dignitaries (called ‘phulam gamosa’ i.e. floral version) during official functions. It is an omnipresent symbol of Assamese culture and identity. It has been in use since 1916 when the 1st student organisation was formed and was a symbol of ‘Assamese nation’. It acquired political flavour in the 1980s during the Assamese Agitations.
