FSSAI’s Initiative Against Obesity and Food Safety

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a nationwide initiative to combat obesity and enhance food safety. This initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s call for urgent action against rising obesity rates and a 10% reduction in oil consumption. The FSSAI’s appeal was brought into light during the 47th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting held on May 27, 2025, in New Delhi.

Overview of the FSSAI Initiative

The FSSAI is focusing on creating awareness about obesity as a public health concern. States and Union Territories (UTs) are urged to implement concrete measures to address this issue. The initiative aims to encourage a healthier nation by promoting better dietary habits.

Key Strategies for Implementation

States are encouraged to develop comprehensive public awareness campaigns. These campaigns should educate citizens about the importance of nutrition and the risks associated with excessive sugar and oil consumption. The FSSAI emphasises that these efforts are crucial for achieving an obesity-free society.

Establishment of Sugar Boards in Schools

A point discussed was the directive from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to establish ‘sugar boards’ in schools. This initiative aims to curb sugar consumption among children. Schools will play a very important role in promoting healthier dietary habits from an early age.

Promoting the ‘Eat Right India’ Movement

The FSSAI is actively promoting the ‘Eat Right India’ movement. This initiative encourages the availability of nutritious and safe food options. It aims to enhance food safety surveillance across all sectors of society. Public health initiatives will be supported through technical guidance from the FSSAI.

Food Safety Surveillance and Enforcement Drives

The FSSAI has also called for intensified inspections to tackle illegal food practices. This includes the use of non-permitted fruit ripening agents and synthetic colourings. Strict vigilance will be maintained over fruit markets to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

Commitment to Public Health

The FSSAI reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding public health. By ensuring food safety and promoting healthier dietary habits, the authority aims to address the growing challenge of obesity. These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to improving the nation’s health landscape.
