Exercise DESERT CYCLONE–II Strengthens India–UAE Military Cooperation

The second edition of the India–UAE Joint Military Exercise DESERT CYCLONE–II concluded with a formal closing ceremony at Al-Hamra Training City in Abu Dhabi, marking the successful completion of intensive bilateral training between the Indian Army and the UAE Land Forces. Conducted from 18 to 30 December, the exercise reaffirmed the growing defence partnership between India and the United Arab Emirates and their shared commitment to regional peace, security and stability.

Scope and Objectives of the Exercise

Exercise DESERT CYCLONE–II focused on enhancing interoperability, mutual trust and operational synergy between the two forces in an urban warfare environment. The training was structured around sub-conventional operations conducted under a United Nations mandate. A balanced approach was adopted, combining classroom-based instruction with realistic field training to ensure conceptual clarity as well as practical proficiency.

Key Training Activities and Skill Development

Joint activities included urban combat fundamentals, marking and clearing of buildings, improvised explosive device awareness, casualty evacuation and first aid. Emphasis was also placed on detailed mission planning processes. These activities enabled both contingents to exchange operational experiences and align their tactical approaches in complex urban scenarios.

Practical Drills and Integrated Operations

The exercise featured progressive practical drills in built-up areas, including room intervention, building clearance, heliborne operations and air assault missions. Platoon-level joint assault exercises were conducted to rehearse coordinated offensive and defensive actions. The training culminated in integrated urban operations, demonstrating combined operational readiness and standardisation of tactics, techniques and procedures.
