Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park (ENP) is a 97 km2 national park located in the Idukki and Ernakulam districts of Kerala. Established in 1978, it is the first national park in the state. Administered by the Kerala Department of Forests and Wildlife, Munnar Wildlife Division, ENP is known for its rich biodiversity and is home to various endemic species.

New Attraction in ENP

ENP has a new attraction – a Fernarium, which is the first of its kind in the hill station. The Fernarium is a collection of ferns that have been planted inside the park. As per the officials, 52 varieties of ferns have already been planted, and the plan is to cover all 104 varieties of ferns that are found in the park. The Fernarium is located near the orchidarium, and it will be opened to the public on April 20.

Significance of New Initiatives

The new initiatives in the ENP seek to create awareness about the park’s biodiversity. They will help in promoting ecotourism and conservation of the park.

Ferns – Ecological Indicators of Healthy Forests

Ferns are the ecological indicator of healthy forests. They are part of the Epiphytic family of plants that grow on other plants. They obtain nutrients and water via  leaching from trees. A large number of ferns can be found on the trees inside the park, which is a sign of a healthy forest.

New Facilities for Tourists

ENP has introduced new facilities for tourists, including a selfie point and buggy cars. Three buggy cars have been arranged for visitors to explore the park, and two more will be purchased soon. These new facilities aim to enhance the visitors’ experience and make their trip more enjoyable.

Survey of New Births

A survey of new births in ENP will be conducted on April 20. The last annual census recorded 785 Nilgiri tahrs, and 125 new calves were sighted. Around 150 new calves are expected to be found this time.
