Digital Transformation of PDS
The Government of India launched digital initiatives to enhance the Public Distribution System (PDS). The initiatives include the Depot Darpan Portal, Anna Mitra, and Anna Sahayata. These platforms aim to improve transparency and efficiency in delivering subsidised food grains to over 81 crore beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act.
Depot Darpan Portal
Depot Darpan is a digital self-assessment and monitoring tool for food grain depots. It enables depot officials to evaluate their operations systematically. The portal provides a Composite Rating based on infrastructure and operational parameters. It incorporates IoT sensors for real-time monitoring and CCTV for security. This initiative aims to save approximately ₹275 crore in operational costs and improve efficiency in food grain warehouses.
Anna Mitra Mobile App
Anna Mitra is a mobile application designed for key stakeholders in the PDS. It provides real-time access to operational data for Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealers and Food Inspectors. The app allows dealers to view stock receipts and sales reports. Food Inspectors can conduct geo-tagged inspections to ensure compliance. The app currently operates in four states and is available in Hindi and English.
Anna Sahayata Grievance Redressal System
Anna Sahayata is an advanced grievance redressal platform for PMGKAY beneficiaries. It aims to enhance accessibility and responsiveness in addressing complaints. The platform uses modern communication tools like WhatsApp and IVRS for ease of use. Initially, it operates in five states and supports multiple languages. The system is designed to be citizen-friendly and efficient.
Impact on Food Security and Welfare
These digital initiatives align with the government’s commitment to ensuring food security for vulnerable populations. The One Nation One Ration Card scheme has improved portability, allowing beneficiaries to access food grains from anywhere in the country. The government aims to strengthen nutritional security while maintaining low inflation levels despite global pressures.
Future Developments and Goals
The government has allocated budgets to upgrade PDS infrastructure. A total of ₹280 crore is earmarked for CWC and ₹1000 crore for FCI to enhance operational efficiency.
