India ranks 99th in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index 2025 with a score of 67 as per the recently released Sustainable Development Report 2025. It is India’s first time entering the top 100 out of 193 United Nations (UN) member countries. The report is published by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and tracks yearly progress since 2015. Finland, Sweden and Denmark top the index, despite facing environmental issues from high consumption.

Thousands of devotees have gathered in Assam for the Ambubachi Mela 2025 at the Kamakhya Temple, one of the biggest religious events in Northeast India. The Ambubachi festival is held every June during the monsoon season at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya and is a key centre of Tantrik Shaktism, a Hindu spiritual tradition.

Government of India has recently launched the NAVYA initiative to skill adolescent girls under the Viksit Bharat@2047 Vision. NAVYA stands for Nurturing Aspirations through Vocational Training for Young Adolescent. It is a joint pilot initiative by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). The programme targets girls aged 16–18 years who have passed at least Class 10 and aims to train them in non-traditional job roles.

A new species of gecko named Dravidogecko coonoor has recently been discovered in the Coonoor Hills of the Upper Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu. This gecko is found only in this region, making it endemic to the high elevation areas of the Western Ghats. Its habitat includes montane forests and monoculture plantations, often near human habitations. It has been observed in both natural and urban areas like tree bark, building walls, wall crevices, and plant branches. With this discovery, the total number of Dravidogecko species in the Western Ghats has increased to nine.

Adani Group has recently commissioned India’s first off-grid 5 megawatt (MW) green hydrogen pilot plant in Kutch, Gujarat. The plant has been developed by Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), which is the clean energy arm of Adani Enterprises Limited. An off-grid green hydrogen plant produces hydrogen using electrolysis powered entirely by renewable sources like solar or wind and is not connected to the main power grid. This plant runs fully on solar energy and includes a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for continuous operation.
