The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently launched the global initiative ‘Global Specs 2030’ to ensure affordable eye care access for all by the year 2030. The initiative focuses on five key action areas: Services, Personnel, Education, Cost, and Surveillance. Services aim to improve access to refractive eye care. Personnel focuses on training and building the capacity of eye care workers. Education promotes public awareness about eye health. Cost targets reducing prices of eyeglasses and services. Surveillance strengthens data collection and eye care research. The Global SPECS Network supports collective advocacy, experience sharing, and professional collaboration.

Recently, two new bush frog species named Raorchestes jadoh and Raorchestes jakoid were discovered in Meghalaya. Raorchestes jadoh is named after “Jadoh”, a traditional rice-and-meat dish of the Khasi community. Raorchestes jakoid is named after the Khasi word “jakoid”, meaning frog. These frogs skip the tadpole stage and hatch directly as miniature adults. Raorchestes jadoh was found in Langtor, Eastern West Khasi Hills, at 1,655 metres above sea level. Raorchestes jakoid was recorded in Lawbah, East Khasi Hills, at 815 metres elevation. The frogs were found in bushes and trees near human settlements, showing ecological adaptability.

Recently, the Ministry of Women and Child Development launched the revamped Mission Vatsalya Portal as a unified digital platform for child protection services. It integrates earlier services like Khoya-Paya and TrackChild into a single secure system. It helps avoid duplication of work and improves monitoring through Management Information System (MIS) dashboards. The platform ensures better planning and resource use across States and Union Territories. The portal also records all child helpline cases for quick action and tracking.

Recently, Indian Railways successfully tested India’s first hydrogen-powered coach at Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. This marks a major step in India’s shift towards clean and green transportation. The tested coach is a 1,200 Horse Power (HP) hydrogen train under development. It is part of the Hydrogen for Heritage initiative to run 35 hydrogen-powered trains on heritage and hill routes. Each train will cost ₹80 crore, with ₹70 crore for supporting ground infrastructure per route. Hydrogen fuel offers zero carbon emissions, supporting India’s clean energy transition.

Recently, Nashik rural police exposed a major black-marketing racket involving darshan passes at the famous Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple. The Trimbakeshwar Temple is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Trimbak town, 28 km from Nashik city, Maharashtra. It is situated near Brahamagiri mountain, the origin point of the river Godavari. The temple was built by the third Peshwa Balaji Bajirao on the site of an older shrine. It is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas in India, making it a significant pilgrimage site.
