China Removes General Zhao Zongqi from CPPCC Body

General Zhao Zongqi was removed from the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on 26 August 2026. He also lost his membership in the CPPCC and his post as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Ethnic and Religious Affairs.

Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference

The Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference is a political advisory body in China. It functions alongside the National People’s Congress in the country’s state structure. The CPPCC includes representatives from the Communist Party of China, other political parties, mass organisations, and independent figures.

General Zhao Zongqi and the Western Theatre Command

General Zhao Zongqi served as commander of the People’s Liberation Army Western Theatre Command from 2016 to December 2020. The Western Theatre Command is one of the five theatre commands of the People’s Liberation Army and covers China’s western frontier, including the border with India along the Line of Actual Control.

Galwan Valley Clash and Military Leadership

On 15 June 2020, clashes took place in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh between Indian and Chinese troops. The incident led to the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and at least 4 Chinese soldiers. The Galwan Valley lies in the western sector of the India-China border region.
