The Union Government has approved the renovation of the historic Bascule Bridge at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal cleared the project with an estimated cost of ₹117.54 crore. The renovation aims to modernise the decades-old bridge and improve cargo and vehicular movement within the Kolkata Dock System, a key maritime hub in eastern India.

Approval of the Renovation Project

The proposal for the bridge’s renovation was submitted by the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, and examined by the Delegated Investment Board (DIB). The board, chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, reviewed the proposal during a meeting held on February 16, 2026. After appraisal, the project received approval to proceed with the planned modernisation works.

Financial Support under Sagarmala Programme

The total estimated cost of the project is ₹117.54 crore. The renovation will receive financial assistance of around ₹41 crore under the Sagarmala Programme, the government’s flagship initiative aimed at port-led development and strengthening maritime infrastructure in India. The funding support will help accelerate the upgradation of the bridge and improve port logistics efficiency.

Modernisation of the Historic Double-Leaf Bridge

The Bascule Bridge, built nearly six decades ago by Waagner-Biro Bridge Systems AG, is a double-leaf movable bridge used to facilitate ship movement while allowing road traffic across the dock area. The renovation will include comprehensive structural strengthening and electro-mechanical upgrades. These improvements are expected to enhance operational safety and enable faster, smoother cargo and vehicle movement within the port complex.
