CALM-Brain Digital Repository for Neuropsychiatric Research

Researchers at the Rohini Nilekani Centre for Brain and Mind (CBM), a collaboration between NIMHANS and NCBS-TIFR, have developed CALM-Brain, a pioneering digital repository focused on neuropsychiatric disorders. This initiative represents a major step forward in India’s mental health research ecosystem by integrating diverse datasets for advanced scientific analysis.

About CALM-Brain Initiative

CALM-Brain is the first-of-its-kind digital repository in India that compiles comprehensive data on brain structure and function across various psychiatric conditions. It was initiated in 2016 under the Accelerator program for Discovery in Brain Disorders using Stem Cells (ADBS). The project is jointly funded by the Department of Biotechnology and the Pratiksha Trust, reflecting strong institutional support for neuroscience research.

Scope and Data Collection

The repository integrates multiple forms of data, including clinical records, neuroimaging, behavioural patterns, and genetic information. It focuses on five major neuropsychiatric disorders: addiction, bipolar disorder, dementia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and schizophrenia. This multidisciplinary dataset enables a holistic understanding of complex brain disorders.

Objectives and Research Significance

The primary goal of CALM-Brain is to deepen understanding of disease onset, progression, and underlying biological mechanisms associated with neuropsychiatric conditions. By making the repository open source, it provides access to clinicians and researchers, fostering collaboration and accelerating discoveries in mental health research.

Important Facts for Exams

  • CALM-Brain is India’s first digital repository on brain data for psychiatric disorders
  • Launched under ADBS project in 2016
  • Covers five disorders: addiction, bipolar disorder, dementia, OCD, schizophrenia
  • Developed by CBM (NIMHANS and NCBS-TIFR collaboration)

Clinical and Practical Applications

CALM-Brain is expected to significantly improve diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses. It will help clinicians track disease progression, identify early symptoms, and design personalised treatment strategies. By decoding biological changes in the brain, the platform enhances precision medicine approaches and supports better mental healthcare outcomes in India.
