BSNL Launches Nationwide VoWiFi Service Across India
On New Year, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), India’s state-owned telecommunications provider, announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi), also known as Wi-Fi Calling. The service is now available to BSNL customers across all telecom circles, marking a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to enhance voice connectivity across diverse and challenging geographies.
What Is VoWiFi and How It Works
VoWiFi allows customers to make and receive voice calls and text messages using a Wi-Fi network instead of relying solely on mobile signal strength. Calls are made using the subscriber’s existing mobile number and default phone dialler, without the need for any third-party applications. The service is based on IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology, enabling seamless handover between Wi-Fi and cellular networks without call drops.
Benefits for Rural and Indoor Connectivity
The service is particularly useful in locations where mobile signals are weak or unavailable, such as homes, offices, basements and remote rural areas. As long as a stable Wi-Fi connection is available, including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services, users can access clear and reliable voice services. VoWiFi also helps decongest mobile networks by offloading voice traffic to Wi-Fi infrastructure.
Cost, Availability and Device Support
BSNL has made VoWiFi available free of cost, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi-based calls. The service is supported on most modern smartphones. Customers only need to enable the Wi-Fi Calling option in their handset settings. For device compatibility and technical assistance, users can visit their nearest BSNL customer service centre or contact the BSNL helpline at 1800-1503.
