BSL signs agreement with DRDO to produce military-grade steel.
Bokaro Steel Limited has formalised a technology transfer agreement with the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory of DRDO, enabling large-scale production of specialised steel sheets for strategic defence applications. The partnership strengthens India’s domestic capability in high-performance military materials.
Technology Transfer for Defence-Grade Steel
The licensing agreement provides BSL with access to technology for manufacturing DMR 249A steel sheets. These sheets are engineered for use across naval and land-based platforms, offering durability and strength suited to demanding military environments.
Strengthening India’s Defence Manufacturing Base
BSL executives stated that the collaboration aligns with national efforts to expand indigenous defence production. The PSU aims to continue developing special-grade steels to support evolving requirements of the armed forces and government agencies.
Critical Material for Key Naval Platforms
DMR 249A steel has been under joint development by BSL and DMRL since 2007. The material has already been deployed in major naval vessels including aircraft carriers, stealth frigates, anti-submarine warfare corvettes, and next-generation warships. Over 46,500 tonnes of this grade have been produced to date for critical maritime platforms.
Exam Oriented Facts
