Bhargavastra

The Bhargavastra is a revolutionary counter-drone system developed by Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL). It addresses the growing threat posed by drone swarms. The system underwent successful testing at the Seaward Firing Range in Gopalpur, Odisha, showcasing its capabilities to detect and neutralise small aerial threats. This development is crucial for national security, particularly in the context of modern warfare.

About Bhargavastra

Bhargavastra is designed to counter drone threats effectively. It can detect drones from a distance of over 6 km. The system employs guided micro munitions to neutralise targets. It can launch more than 64 micro missiles simultaneously, making it a formidable defence mechanism.

Technical Specifications

The system consists of two operational layers. The first layer employs unguided micro-rockets capable of targeting multiple drones within a 20-metre radius. The second layer uses guided micro-missiles for precise strikes on individual drones. Additionally, it can integrate jammers and spoofers to disrupt enemy drones, enhancing its defensive capabilities.

Testing and Performance

Three trials were conducted on May 13, 2025, demonstrating the system’s effectiveness. Each trial involved firing one or two rockets. All rockets successfully hit their targets, confirming the system’s reliability. The tests were conducted in the presence of senior military officials, underscoring the importance of this technology.

Applications and Versatility

Bhargavastra is versatile and can operate in various terrains, including high-altitude regions exceeding 5,000 meters. It is suitable for use by the Army, Air Force, and Navy. The system’s modular design allows for adaptability based on mission requirements, making it a valuable asset in diverse operational contexts.

Strategic Importance

The emergence of low-cost drone technology poses challenges for traditional air defence systems. Bhargavastra provides a cost-effective solution to counter these threats while preserving advanced missile systems for larger aerial threats. This dual approach enhances India’s defence strategy amid evolving security dynamics.

Global Context

Bhargavastra is unique, with few comparable systems existing worldwide. Its development aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative, showcasing the country’s capability to produce advanced defence technologies domestically. This system marks step forward in indigenous defence manufacturing.
