Ayush Ministry Launches In-Flight Yoga Routine for Travellers

The Ministry of Ayush has introduced a specially curated five-minute in-flight yoga routine to promote health and wellness among air travellers. Launched during Yoga Mahotsav 2026, the initiative aims to address common health concerns associated with long-duration flights. Designed to be simple and accessible, the protocol reflects the government’s effort to integrate preventive healthcare practices into everyday settings, including air travel.

Focus on preventive healthcare during flights

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted that yoga serves as an effective tool for preventive healthcare and overall well-being. The initiative underscores the importance of maintaining physical and mental health even in confined environments such as aircraft cabins. It aligns with broader efforts to mainstream yoga as a daily lifestyle practice.

Addressing risks of prolonged sitting

Long hours of immobility during flights often lead to stiffness, fatigue, poor circulation and increased stress. In some cases, it may also elevate the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). The newly introduced yoga protocol seeks to counter these issues through gentle movements and breathing techniques that can be performed while seated, helping passengers remain active and comfortable.

Simple routine tailored for accessibility

Developed by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, the routine combines light physical exercises, breathing practices and short meditation. It includes centring techniques, joint movements such as shoulder rotations and ankle stretches, seated spinal twists and controlled breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom and Bhramari. The protocol requires no special equipment and is designed for ease of practice during flights.
