Arunachal Pradesh Launches First Commercial Coal Mine

Arunachal Pradesh is set to begin its coal mining journey with the launch of the Namchik-Namphuk coal block in Changlang district on 6 October 2025. The event will be led by Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy, who will perform the Bhoomi Poojan and officially hand over the mining lease. This marks a major milestone for the state and the Northeast region’s mining sector.

Project Overview

The Namchik-Namphuk coal block holds reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes. Initially allocated in 2003, the project faced delays due to operational challenges. It was revived in 2022 through a transparent auction process that allowed private sector participation. This project is Arunachal Pradesh’s first commercial coal mine. India is currently the world’s second-largest coal producer.

Significance for Arunachal Pradesh

The mine is expected to generate over ₹100 crore annually in revenue for the state. It will also create numerous jobs for local youth. The launch intends to end illegal mining and resource exploitation. The government aims to establish transparency and accountability in natural resource management.

Government Initiatives and Vision

The project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s EAST vision—Empower, Act, Strengthen, Transform—focused on the Northeast. Officials have been instructed to ensure speedy mine operationalisation. The initiative supports Atmanirbhar Bharat by promoting local resources, jobs, and strength.

Environmental and Sustainability Measures

The Ministry of Coal has assured that mining activities will not harm the region’s ecology. Arunachal Pradesh is known for its green valleys and rivers. The government plans to develop the region as a global model for sustainable mining. As part of the launch, 100 trees will be planted under the ministry’s green initiative.

Future Prospects in Mineral Exploration

The government will auction two critical mineral blocks in Arunachal Pradesh and five in Assam. This puts stress on the Northeast’s growing role in India’s technological and strategic mineral landscape. The focus is on harnessing local mineral wealth responsibly and efficiently.
