Artisan Beats, Korean Hip-Hop Pioneer, Dies at 47

Artisan Beats, born Seo Jae-min and recognised as a first-generation figure in Korean hip-hop, passed away on February 17 at the age of 47. The news was confirmed by fellow rappers AJ and Minos, who had collaborated with him during the Master Plan Allstarz era. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Tributes from the Hip-Hop Community

Members of Bulhandang Crew, where Artisan Beats served as a producer, announced his passing through their official channels, expressing condolences and honouring his contribution to the scene. The crew described him as a foundational figure whose work shaped their musical identity.

Rapper Kim Ji-hong shared an emotional message, recalling three decades of friendship and collaboration. Music critic Kang Il-kwon also paid tribute, describing Artisan Beats as a “living witness” to the birth and growth of Korean hip-hop. He remembered their shared moments and expressed shock at the sudden news.

Role in First-Generation Korean Hip-Hop

Born in 1979, Seo Jae-min emerged during the formative years of South Korea’s hip-hop movement. He was a core member of Da Crew and later associated with Master Plan Allstarz, collectives that played a critical role in popularising underground rap in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Beyond performing, he built a reputation as a skilled producer. His work was noted for darker tonal textures and experimental beats, reflecting the raw and rebellious spirit of early Korean hip-hop. His influence extended across crews and collaborative projects, helping establish a distinct local sound.

Evolution of His Musical Identity

In his early career, he performed under the stage name “Satan”, aligning with the intense and gritty aesthetic of underground rap. Over time, he shed the moniker and reintroduced himself as Artisan Beats, signalling artistic maturity and reinvention.

He continued releasing music in the 2010s. In 2014, he collaborated with Born Kim on the single ‘Jimmy Chu’. A year later, he released the EP ‘Chun’, further demonstrating his versatility as both lyricist and producer. His passing marks the loss of a pioneering voice in South Korea’s hip-hop history.
