Apna Ghar Initiative

The Government of India launched the ‘Apna Ghar’ initiative to improve the safety and well-being of truck drivers during long journeys. This programme provides hygienic and comfortable resting spaces along major highways. As of July 1, 2025, 368 units with over 4,600 beds have been established by Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) at fuel stations nationwide. The initiative aims to support truck drivers who are vital to India’s supply chain.

Background and Purpose

Truck drivers often face poor rest conditions during long hauls. Lack of proper rest impacts their health and road safety. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas introduced ‘Apna Ghar’ to address these issues. It focuses on providing safe, clean, and accessible rest areas for drivers across national and state highways.

Facilities Provided

‘Apna Ghar’ units offer dormitory-style accommodation with 4,611 beds. Facilities include clean toilets, dedicated bathing areas, and purified drinking water. Drivers can use restaurants or dhabas on-site. Some locations provide self-cooking spaces for greater convenience. These amenities ensure drivers can rest and refresh comfortably.

Implementation and Reach

Public Sector OMCs manage the ‘Apna Ghar’ units at retail fuel outlets. The programme covers major highways connecting key cities and states. It has rapidly expanded to 368 units by mid-2025. This widespread network supports truckers throughout their routes, improving rest options across the country.

Technology Integration and User Response

A dedicated mobile application supports the initiative. Truckers can book beds, locate facilities, and register through the app. The number of downloads and user registrations continues to grow. Feedback marks satisfaction with the comfort and convenience provided. This digital tool enhances accessibility and user experience.

Government Commitment

The launch of ‘Apna Ghar’ reflects the government’s commitment to the trucking workforce. It aims to improve infrastructure and working conditions for truck drivers. The programme supports safer roads and recognises the critical role of truckers in maintaining India’s supply chains.
