Anna Chakra Named Finalist for 2026 Franz Edelman Award
India’s public distribution reforms have gained major global recognition as the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) has been named among the six finalists for the prestigious 2026 Franz Edelman Award. The nomination is for “Anna Chakra”, an operations research–based decision support system that optimises state-specific logistics to strengthen India’s Public Distribution System (PDS).
Global Recognition for Public Sector Innovation
Widely regarded as the “Nobel Prize of Operations Research and Analytics”, the Franz Edelman Award honours the world’s most impactful applications of advanced analytics. Anna Chakra now stands alongside global corporate finalists such as Chewy, NVIDIA, Google, Microsoft, and ECCO Shoe. Its selection places an Indian government-led digital public system on the international stage as a benchmark for analytics-driven governance and large-scale logistics optimisation.
Collaborative Development and National Rollout
Anna Chakra was developed through a Government–UN–Academia partnership involving the Department of Food and Public Distribution, the World Food Programme in India, and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. The initiative was launched nationally in December 2025 by Union Minister “Pralhad Joshi”, and uses advanced optimisation models to improve the movement and allocation of food grains across states.
Measurable Impact on Economy, Climate, and Welfare
The nationwide deployment of Anna Chakra has delivered significant outcomes. These include estimated annual savings of ₹250 crore, a 35 percent reduction in logistics-related emissions supporting India’s climate commitments, and major efficiency gains benefiting more than 81 crore PDS beneficiaries, particularly vulnerable populations dependent on food security schemes.
