Andhra Pradesh Launches Smart Mosquito Surveillance System

The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a pioneering AI-based mosquito control programme named the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS). This innovative initiative aims to monitor and reduce mosquito populations efficiently during the monsoon season. It is the first of its kind in India to integrate artificial intelligence with public health vector control. The pilot will operate in 66 locations across six major municipal corporations including Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Kurnool.

Technology and Functionality

SMoSS employs AI-powered mosquito sensors and drones alongside IoT devices. These tools detect mosquito species, gender, and population density. They also record weather factors like temperature and humidity which influence mosquito breeding. When mosquito numbers exceed safe limits, the system sends automatic alerts to civic teams. This triggers prompt spraying or fogging operations targeted precisely where needed. The approach replaces ineffective blind spraying with data-driven actions.

Drone Usage and Efficiency

Drones are used to spray larvicides over large areas quickly. This method covers more ground with fewer chemicals. It reduces costs and environmental impact. The drone technology ensures timely treatment of mosquito breeding sites, improving overall vector control effectiveness. It also allows access to hard-to-reach areas, enhancing the reach of interventions.

Data Management and Accountability

SMoSS features a real-time dashboard that streams live data to a central server. This enables continuous monitoring and rapid response. The programme will be outsourced to specialised agencies with result-based payments, ensuring operational accountability. Citizen complaints and feedback from field staff are managed via mobile apps like Vector Control and Puramitra. This creates transparency and improves service delivery.

Health Integration and Hotspot Identification

Hospitals across Andhra Pradesh will report daily cases of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. This health data helps identify mosquito hotspots for targeted action. Special plans for fogging and larval treatment are prepared based on these reports. The focus is on prevention through containment of mosquito vectors to safeguard public health.

Government Vision and Impact

The initiative aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s goal to become the first state of India to adopt AI in governance extensively. SMoSS represents a step towards integrating AI into everyday public services. It demonstrates the government’s commitment to using technology for improving citizens’ quality of life.
