Veteran actor, director and theatre practitioner Amol Palekar will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 21st Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) 2026. The prestigious theatre festival will be held in New Delhi from 19 to 25 March 2026. Instituted by the Mahindra Group and produced by Teamwork Arts, META celebrates outstanding theatrical productions and practitioners from across India. The honour recognises Palekar’s decades-long contribution to Indian theatre and cinema, where he has played a pioneering role as an actor, director and creative visionary.
Legacy in Theatre and Cinema
Amol Palekar is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern Indian performing arts. His work has spanned theatre, film and television for several decades. Known for his distinctive storytelling approach, Palekar helped redefine performance styles on stage and screen. In theatre, he experimented with unconventional spaces and formats, making performances accessible to wider audiences. His creative vision contributed significantly to the evolution of contemporary Indian theatre.
Icon of the 1970s Hindi Cinema
Palekar became a household name in Hindi cinema during the 1970s. Unlike the dominant larger-than-life heroes of the era, he portrayed the relatable “boy-next-door” character, which resonated strongly with urban audiences. His performances in socially relevant and realistic films brought a fresh narrative style to Bollywood. With three consecutive silver jubilee hits early in his film career, he quickly rose to prominence and later established himself as a filmmaker exploring nuanced social and personal themes.
