Amit Shah to Launch Delhi Water Projects Worth ₹8,941 Crore

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to launch and lay foundation stones for 43 Delhi Jal Board (DJB) projects worth ₹8,941.22 crore on 22 October 2026. The projects cover water supply and sewage infrastructure and include measures to reduce pollution in the Yamuna River.

Project allocation and sewage infrastructure

Ten projects, valued at ₹2,827.11 crore, are scheduled for inauguration, while foundation stones will be laid for 33 projects worth ₹6,114.11 crore. The projects include a 124 million gallons per day (MGD) sewage treatment plant (STP) at Okhla, estimated to cost ₹1,161 crore. Eight existing STPs are to be upgraded at a cost of ₹1,041 crore.

The combined treatment capacity of the eight STPs is planned to rise from 78.2 MGD to 140.8 MGD, with approximately 78.5 lakh people expected to benefit. Other works include 29 decentralised sewage treatment plants and sewage pumping stations in Outer Delhi, a 1,034-kilometre sewer network, and a 477 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant at Chandrawal. One MGD is approximately 4.546 MLD.

Water supply and wastewater treatment

A sewage treatment plant treats wastewater before its discharge or reuse. A water treatment plant processes raw water to make it suitable for supply. Sewage pumping stations move wastewater through sewer networks, particularly where gravity alone cannot maintain flow.

Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, also referred to as Parvesh Verma, announced the projects. He stated that the stated target is to prevent untreated wastewater from entering the Yamuna within the next two to two-and-a-half years.

Yamuna clean-up campaign

The ‘Chalo Yamuna’ campaign took place on 18 October 2026. More than 35,000 people participated in clean-up activities at 70 locations along the Yamuna, removing 76,755 kilograms of municipal solid waste.
