AMCA Project
India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the execution model for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. This initiative aims to develop a fifth-generation deep penetration fighter jet for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The project signifies a major step towards enhancing India’s indigenous defence capabilities and encouraging a robust aerospace industry.
AMCA Project
The AMCA is a twin-engine, medium-weight multirole fighter jet. It features advanced stealth capabilities, including a stealth airframe and internal weapons bays. The aircraft is designed for deep penetration missions, close combat, and precision strikes. It will weigh approximately 25 tonnes and aims to enhance India’s air power.
Execution Model and Industry Involvement
The execution model allows both private and public sector companies to bid for contracts. This competitive framework is a shift from previous practices where projects were primarily assigned to state-owned firms. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) will lead the project in partnership with Indian industry players.
Strategic Importance
India’s entry into the fifth-generation fighter club, alongside the US, Russia, and China, reflects its growing defence ambitions. The AMCA project is crucial for enhancing India’s strategic autonomy amid evolving regional security challenges.
Development Timeline and Costs
The Cabinet Committee on Security approved the AMCA programme in March 2024. The estimated development cost is around ₹15,000 crore. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) aims to deliver the AMCA prototype by 2035.
Technological Advancements
The AMCA will incorporate cutting-edge technologies, including advanced avionics and electronic warfare systems. The development of the engine is critical and will involve international collaboration to mitigate risks.
Self-Reliance
The execution model is step towards Atmanirbharta, or self-reliance, in India’s aerospace sector. By inviting competitive bids, the government aims to leverage indigenous expertise and strengthen the domestic defence industrial base. The ADA will soon issue an Expression of Interest for the development phase.
